Ew.
(I heard it from bookshelves of doom, who had it from Read Roger, who, as it turns out, says "for reals" for real.)

Maybe it's just me, but I personally don't have a huge issue with product placement. I actually think to kind of flip-flop the issue a little, that reading and books suffer because they're not really marketed. With the exception of Harry Potter, when was the last time you heard anything about books in the media? I'm also going to put aside the discussion of books that come up with the release of any story to film, as, that's more advertising for the film that spills over. If there was more product placement for books, maybe there would be a upswing in reading and book sales. I for one know I chose to read The Feminine Mystique in high school because it was mentionned in 10 Things I Hate About You. I'm also insane, but, you know that.
So yes, I love name-dropping, I love sponsorship deals, and I think I kind of sound like the devil right now, haha.
There's marketing books, and then there is placing products in books by name. There are ways to put books out there without selling out. Last night, at the YA author panel, two of the authors mentioned that knowing contacts in the publishing world is a great way to get publishers to market your book. So, I am all about marketing, but keeping it classy.
